The company has since expanded its business into over 50 countries, including India and the United States.
The average Uber driver earns about $40,000 annually.
Kalanick is one of only two women on Uber’s board of directors.
She’s the first woman to lead a Fortune 500 company.
Uber has been criticized for not hiring enough women in senior roles and not paying enough women at the top.
Kalanicks predecessor, Travis Kalani, was named CEO in August, but he did not hire a single woman for his leadership team.
